CBD: Does CBD Get You High?
Understand the Difference between CBD and THC

Among the strongest components of the cannabis Sativa plant, CBD is one of the most important compounds. Plants from the cannabis family have more than 500 active compounds. CBD: Does CBD Get You High? Understand the Difference between CBD and THC.

There is yet another cannabinoid that produces the strong psychoactive effects of being “high,” Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Using CBD alone will not cause you to feel “high” like you would with THC.

In all cannabis types, CBD and THC are present, although in different concentrations. C sativa and C indica varieties that contain high amounts of THC and low amounts of CBD are considered to be high THC varieties. 12% THC and less than 0.15% CBD were the average amounts in cannabis plants in 2014

Conversely, hemp is a non-intoxicating variety of Cannabis sativa. Hemp plants must not contain more than 0.3% THC according to the 2018 Farm Bill. The average hemp plant contains approximately 18% CBD.

Cannabis-derived CBD is chemically identical to hemp-derived CBD, and its effects are the same. Food, dietary supplements, and products marketed as medical products cannot contain CBD.

Exactly what is THC?

It is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is cannabis’s primary psychoactive component.

The THC molecule binds to cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors located in brain regions of the learning cortex associated with memory, movement, pain sensation, and inflammation. In addition, THC is bound to cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptors in the brainstem and hippocampus, which are related to memory and emotions. CB2 receptors are also found in immune cells, bone cells, and spleen and liver cells.

THC’s powerful physical and psychological effects are attributed to the widespread distribution of these cannabinoid receptors.

Cannabidiol (CBD)and its effects

There has been a significant increase in both public and academic interest in CBD due to its potential health benefits.

Several recent reviews have found evidence that CBD may inhibit the ability of THC and other cannabinoids to bind to the CB1 receptor. The result may be a reduction of psychoactive effects from THC as well as an increase in cannabinoids circulating in the body.

Based on a study published in Surgical Neurology International in 2018, CBD is thought to inhibit inflammation in the brain in part through indirect interactions with CB2 receptors.

Epidiolex, a hemp-derived CBD formulation derived from hemp, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating two rare types of epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
